Concert Winds
The Concert Winds consist of all freshmen band students. During the year students continue to build their technique and musicianship. The curricular focus of the freshmen lessons is the ability to play music in all 12 major keys, play music in complex rhythms, and increase their range in all directions. The Concert Winds also provides the music for the GHS Graduation.
Jazz Ensemble
Jazz Ensemble meets during 9th Hour during the second semester. It performs at the April Spring Band Concert.
The class uses computer technology to learn the theory behind music. As part of the curriculum, students will compose various music compositions with computer technology. This class is highly recommended for anyone who may be thinking of majoring or minoring in music at the college level. The 2009 MTCC Class consists of 18 students. This is the largest class we have had for Music Theory in over a decade.
See Mr. Barnes for more information regarding this class.
Symphonic Band
Consisting of students in grades 10 through 12, the Symphonic Band performs music of medium to advanced high school caliber.
Beginning in the 2nd semester, the Symphonic Band will rehearse and perform a variety of challenging music.
The music will include William Schuman’s “Chester Overture For Band” and Mark Camphouse’s “Three London Miniatures.”
The Symphonic Band members will also be gaining experience in chamber music by rehearsing and performing small ensembles from trios, quartets and quintets.
It is going to be a great season!!
Mr. Barnes
This year’s theme was “The Music of Danny Elfman” and featured songs from Spiderman, Tales From the Crypt, Nightmare Before Christmas, Ice Dance and Beetljuice.
After solid performances at Marching Band Madness, Waukesha South and Greendale, the Wall of Sound received a score of 80.74 at the State Marching Band Championships. This is the first time the Wall has ever scored in the 80’s.
It is so exciting to see the end result of all of the work everybody put in throughout the season. It is also great to know that the Wall members and their parents enjoyed the show. Once again, the Wall was crowd favorite at SMBC. I heard that the entire Cedarburg Band gave us a standing ovation (among several others). Our philosophy is to perform a quality and entertaining show. That we accomplished indeed.
Congratulations to everyone for an outstanding season and a special thank you to the Warhawk Band Boosters for their financial support and volunteer assistance along the way. Without the WBB, the Wall could not exist.
Wind Symphony
The GHS Wind Symphony consists of 60-65 of the finest instrumentalists at Germantown High School.
Next year’s Wind Symphony begins rehearsals during the second semester (January 2010).
The primary musical challenge will be Robert W. Smith’s Third Symphony. This work is sub-titled “Don Quixote” and has an intriguing Spanish flavor to it. There are four separate movements. The Wind Symphony has performed Smith’s First (Divine Comedy) and Second (The Odyssey) Symphonies in the recent past.
We will also be working on Eric Whitacre’s “October” and several other challenging works.
